Yarn Along

I was on vacation last week – my first true vacation in many, many years. Technically it was a “working” vacation, since I was supposed to be finishing some short stories that seem always to be in progress and adding another chapter to my novel. Those tasks didn’t get done, but I did get ideas for several new short stories and spent some time brainstorming and drafting these (oh good – more unfinished work!). I did a lot of reading, and right now I’m finishing Leif Enger’s Peace Like a River – which was a snooze until this really creepy guy was introduced around page 200, and now things are hopping – but at one point toward the end of the week when I was bored with Peace Like a River, I picked up Robert Stone’s novel A Flag for Sunrise and read the first 30 pages, and WOW. I predict that this coming weekend I’ll be so transfixed by this novel that I won’t even have time to berate myself for not having finished Paradise Lost yet.

Also last week, I met up with the friend who special-ordered the tank sweater I’ve been working on. She was really happy, and I think the sizing is going to work out well (in spite of the fact that I started it without her measurements because I was so excited I didn’t want to wait for her to send them to me!). This project pushed me way out of my comfort zone – I never would have attempted something like this if she hadn’t asked – and it really wasn’t all that hard. I’m already plotting a longer version – like a minidress, to be worn with tights or leggings.

Yarn Along is hosted by Ginny on her blog, Small Things.

Happy Wednesday!

Interesting how we all enjoy different reads.

I thoroughly admire the artistry of the language throughout the novel. For the first two-thirds, the plot didn’t interest me much, and I felt I had read a lot of similar child-protagonist morality tales already (Bless Me, Ultima, Wingshooters, Montana 1948, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc.). I still don’t think this book will ever be a favorite of mine, but I thought the introduction of Jape Waltzer made the novel really come to life.

But yes – it’s always interesting how a book can inspire such different reactions!
