I looked this book up on amazon, and was fascinated to see that one of the main characters is named “God.” I agree that that is a name we should not have to live with for several hundred pages.
Yes – Goddard Byrd, nicknamed “God”! I had actually forgotten the particulars, but your comment brought it all back. I think he has an affair with someone. This was probably meant to be ironic.
